Sunday Sunderings ... "getting to yes"

Critics say a root cause of the continued Middle East bloodshed conflict is that one side is given free reign to do as they need to "protect" and "defend" themselves ... while the other side is branded as terrorists. In my humble opinion, because I have the luxury of thought from an ocean away, under those terms and definition, there will never be any peace at all.

The best way to reach a sustainable argreement to truly understand the other viewpoint. The book, "Getting to Yes", postulates to this effect. Understanding the other perspective is not as selfless or as altruistic as you may think. When one party (A) tries to understand the viewpoint of the other party (B):

1. B will recognize and appreciate the efforts of A and will then be more open to understanding B's point of view
2. in recognizing and understanding B, A may have a renewed/ enlightened/ empathetic feeling towards the situation
3. now we have both sides who are open and willing to work towards a mutually beneficialy (and human) solution because each has a level of trust that they are both working towards a common and fair goal.

Currently there is obvious bias in the Middle East crisis and this only fuels the hatred and intolerance. Favouring one side, without concern for the massive loss of human lives, will never bring about "lasting peace". Instead it will rally the forces.

I am no diplomat and my dealings with Israelies and Arabs are minimal, but I simply refuse to see people as Israeli/Jewish or Arab/ Muslim. They are humans, just like me, and I grieve for any loss of innocent life - irrespective of the side - because the ground in which they are buried doesn't know the difference between black/ white or Muslim/ Jew/ Christian/ Sabian or man/ woman/ child. Truly I grieve.

(the pictures appear disturbing - but it is the inhumanity of the situation that is , in fact, disturbing)

If not "peace" then perhaps truce - but yes, your thinking is correct, unfortunately!
This conflict is not solely about Lebanon and Israel. Ms Rice packed her suitcases and left the region prematurely again after being shunned by the Lebanese government for not promoting a cease fire.
There is no diplomatic muscle left either by the US or the UN to stop this escalation.
I don't want to rush to conclusions, but it seems that this region of the world is doomed to self-destruction. Strange that Israel ( who just started to become an independent entity only a few decades ago) does not have any foresight in this regard. Neither does the US who follows blindly a path of submission which of course is understandable if you take into account that half of the government are Jews and two thirds in the cooperate finance as well. Hollywood 90%? Who cares. But there is no reasonable or should I say rational assessment within main stream US culture/politics/ opinion. It's all dulled down to automatic submission - whatever Israel does must be supported. Heck, there is no much luster or future in that stance.
On the other hand I must condemn Hizbollah for sacrificing a whole country to promote a purposeless rally to find the truth in scriptures of Muhammad, perhaps condemning Israel in its very existence.
People of intelligence both in Lebanon and Israel do not wish this escalation to continue. It is counterproductive to both of them, and they know it.
Unfortunately it is not people of intelligence who have the say. Therefore this crisis is going down in history as the bloodshed of the stupid.

I daily pray this stupid war comes to an end immediately.

Caco - I pray with you. And I must admit it is most appropriate to call it a "STUPID WAR".

And what is intolerable is that the rest of the world watches and talks and takes sides ... it's beyond my brain cells Caco - and I can only pray with you.

Hey - how was your weekend my friend?

Caco the picture you sent is perfect for "Picturesque Monday"and I shall have it up tomorrow. Thank you so much! It is thoughtful and absolutely appripos!

Dear Zee - thank you. Further to your points - Hezbollah is wrong - but because of the obvious bias that exists, they are able to mobilize further support from other unholy forces.

Watching the news, I see the faces of Isralis and the Lebanese civilians, and I cannot tell the difference.

As long as there is bias and lack of regard for human life, there will never ever be peace - and you have said it in the best possible way - it is the bloodshed of the STUPID. Oh, but it breaks my heart.

Zee - I feel so lucky to be alive - I feel so determined to be of good use. BTW, I am working on a recipe for your blog - salmon. I shall try it tomorrow with personalized modification and post it soon!

Zee - there are many negatives in the world, but a positive are the rare people like you who are not afrad to think and not afraid to express the truth as they see it - not afraid to be human and to be alive

Zee ya! Are you smiling? I hope so!

If we could ONLY get everyone else to understand that we are human beings and set aside ethnic origins and religious beliefs, perhaps the world would be at peace.

This very same reason is why If given the opportunity to, I would create a world without religion because there wouldn't be half the negativity and evil that exists now because of the extremist beliefs people have.

This is not to say that religion is bad, but the people who follow it take it to extremes that only harm our fellow humans instead of helping them.

From the dawn of time there has always been war, death, horror, and none of these things are going to change so long as the poor and uneducated keep believing that a bigger reward exists out there for killing another fellow human being.

How sad.

well, i agree with Jeff on several points there, but not when it comes to putting all the blame on 'the poor and uneducated', unless that is also how he categorizes the Israeli and U.S. government. Is it not "using civilians as shields" when the Israelis inhabit illegally occupied territories? Is it not "terrorism" when they randomly bomb apartment buildings? Is it not "ethnic cleansing" when they force a million people to evacuate their homes? And apply those last two preceeding statements to recent equivalent actions by the U.S. in Iraq (Najaf, Fallujah, Ramadi, etc ...)

This whole "terrorism" jag is just a racist mislabeling of a much deeper and gloomier crisis - the fact that there does exist a reward for oppression and murder and war. We like to call it "civilization" or "our way of life". It's how the West was won. It's how the West is still "winning".

...Dr Nazli, off the topic, but I think that youve got a misconception about me...just joking...

Nazli Hardy said...

Dear Tom - I echo your points firmly - you have put in words that many around the world feel in their hearts.

the definitions of "terrorism" and "civilization" and "democracy" tear apart any fiber of reasoning. Humanity is not a factor in any one of those terms. It is heartbreaking and beyond conscience

but even empires are subject to the universal force of balance ...

very hot in the east coast - though I counted 5 drops of rain on my window sill

Nazli Hardy said...

Jeff - I agree that the misinterpretation of religion is a root cause of trouble - but so is the blind imbalance and bias of power. The former is heavily weighted in the uneducated masses, but the latter are the educated moneyed people who forget they are as mortal as the poor

Fernando - ditto ;-)

MERHABA KIZKARDEŞİM,
WELL WELL ,being an islam I cannot see any valid reason why this religion and christianity cannot cooperate.ı know that some fanatic men in islam preach jihad(holy war)against unbelievers and that they try to assasinate their own leaders to foment such war.But no sensible muslim listens to them .They are todays equivalent of the hot headed Christian knights who,in the middle Ages vowed to exterminate all muslim.Age cures such rashness.
Nor can I find any permanent reason why Arabs and Zionists should comntinue their temporary emnity. In the long sweep of history muslims and Jews have cooperated in the areas of mutual interest .True, there have been repeated troubles .But even under the worst calips Jews held position of influence and in general retained religious freedom with muslim society.Today israel is an exasperation to muslims esp to arabs and a temptation to rash action but once the immediate and pressing problems have been settled ,muslims and jews should be expected again to exst in harmony as they did more than 1350 years...
