Sunday Sunderings ... on Miss Universe and Floyd Landis

Today is my favourite day of the year.

For Sunday Sunderings, I am keeping it light ... oh yes, I watched the
Miss Universe contest every year - for reasons only a girly girl could understand ;-). Predictably South Americas, India, USA make it to the top 15 most years and then after that I am not at all sure on what criteria the winner is chosen because most of the answers appear scripted and unbelievable but they all look incredibly beautiful. Miss Universe 2000 and Miss Universe 1997, Lara Dutt and Brooke Lee, respectively, were exceptional; articulate, dazzlling, confident, elegant and certainly beautiful.
The Miss USA contestant said her weakness was carrying her heart on her shoulders and caring too much about others ... The top 3 contestant were Switzerland, Japan, and Puerto Rico and I was convinced that Miss Japan would win since she was articulate, could speak several languages and was very confident. But Miss Puerto Rico won and I am losing no sleep over it. The best part of this year's Miss Universe competition were the musical performers: Vittorio Grigolo and Chelo.

Floyd Landis is the winner of Tour de France 2006. What a spectacular achievement! He hails from Eastern Pennsylvania and comes from a Menonite family - they have strict values and he broke from that at the age of 20 to be who he wanted to be. Read the SI article for further insight. A church member said of him: "We are disappointed with the lifestyle he lives, but I love him as a friend and care about him."

Disappointed??? Floyd Landis chose the lifestyle of a winner - he trained hard for half his life to be where he is today - on his own terms. He touches and inspires millions of people worldwide - so how exactly is he disappointing?

And my perspective on a question posed below: I have been absorbing BBC History magazine lately, and it appears that often it is blind religious fervour and undue self-righteousness, at the expense of doing the right thing, that renders a superpower, powerless. This is true of people on an indivual scale too, n'est pas?

Wishing you a winning week ahead!

...well, I dont understand the focus of this post...so..

.I think at least 50% of the photos lies (check it_take a person in which you can see 10 or 20 pict in different posses..)
so in this very pict, these girls are beautiful, but I dont know... some people are photogenic and others not; or the make up; or the light; the problems that you see in some faces; etc

-reminds me to my exgirl, that look like a crash between these girls and Frida Kalo - Penelope Cruz.

I like really obscure pageants like Miss Teen USA.
And regarding disappointment and blind religious fervour, I think as soon as someone rates dogma above a person they have lost their way

Pageants, I see them every day, and I muse...

in a world going haywire, since when is caring too much for others a weakness? If we all shared such weakness what an asset and great strength to mankind that would be.
Reminds me of my recent post, One Minute to Midnite.

Joe! Exactly - I was trying to make that same point, albeit subtly, that what kind of an answer was that for one's weakness??

My weaknesses are a plenty; for example I am easily distracted, unless I am really interested, but then again were I at the Miss Universe contest, I probably would not have scored too many points for that answer ;-)

Joe - is "midnite" the American spelling for "midnight"?

Cheers for now and I shall be reading your "One Minute to Midnite" piece.

Mr Angry - we both know that dogma is the rule of the unenlightened, so humanity has a tough call.

As for beauty Pageants, how about the one hel in china for those women who have been artificially beautified?

Ciao for the Northern Hemisphere ;-)

Candancimmmm! One good friend like you is enough for the luckiest girl!

Since we are talking of beauty pageants, my beautiful friend, was Miss Turkey not a "Miss World" recently?

These beauty pageants work against the realm of religion and culture. Beauty is to be appreciated, but I have seen far more beautiful people than on any Miss Universe

Cris! Happy Birthday my gorgeous friend! How are you? The world is certainly far more beautful with you around.

Miss World is actually a different pageant than Miss Universe (and yes I acknowledge I know too much about beauty pageant than that becoming a professor). Most countries have 3 major winners: one goes to Miss Universe, one to Miss World, and one often to a Miss Continental. This is big money for media companies, and fashion products and I susect amny of them are a little rigged.

Huge hug to you for your birthday and I shall of-course be mentioning you on today's blog. What are you up to today? come by and lt's have cake on the porch along with all the fearless bloggers to celebrate your birthday!

Fernando,

The focus of this post is simply the laughable harmless insincerity of Beauty Pageants, becuase afterall beauty is indefinable. It is different to different people and differnt cultures. but still it is fn

Also another point was about Floyd Landis, who is a winner yet people in his relgious community cannot see past their dogma. Right or wrong, I don;t know, but as far as I am concerned living on one's own terms is the only way to live

Cheers for now :-)
