Italian speedskater Enrico Fabris stunned a sell-out crowd in
Sitting in the center of the rink, Fabris had waited impatiently for the feuding Hedrick and Davis to complete their races.
The crowd stood up and cheered for the 24-year-old who will occupy a place in their hearts alongside former Olympic skiing champion Alberto Tomba -- until now Italy's most famos Winter Olympian.
Hedrick, who badly wanted a second gold medal after two disappointing races, was left dejected, looking at Fabris.
Hedrick, the 5,000 meters gold medalist, and Davis have locked horns over the past week after Davis, the winner of the 1,000 meters, refused to take part in the team pursuit.
Hedrick accused him of selfish behaviour, spoiling his chances for five gold medals at these Games.
Davis had hugged Hedrick after the latter had won the 5,000 meters. Hedrick did not even shake hands after Davis won the 1,000 meters.
Today, Hedrick, visibly disappointed, forced a brief smile for the cameras as Davis congratulated Fabris in front of the photographers.
at the expense of sounding judgmental...some winners are champions while some winners are just fast skaters...
