Ok - let's get to the point - the time for sugar-coating anti-Islam is over. In my opinion, this measure by the right-wing Dutch party is indeed anti-Islamic. HOWEVER a burkha is not inherently Islamic - it is inherently a cultural imposition - a cruel one. I even understand the fear of some European countries against this type of culture dominating their liberal way of life. But they must not be patronizing and mask their anti-Islamic leanings in the name of "security".
As a woman - no as a human - my face is a part of my physical identity. It is not a matter of beauty at all - because that is subjective. But the expression of my eyes when I smile, when I laugh, when I see the world around me through a 3 dimensional periphery - these are all a part of my identity and my connection to the world.
It is a violation of human rights to force a woman to cover herself from head to toe in a shapeless dark cloth! This inhumanity is propogated by fathers, brothers, husbands, imams, politicians, and by other women, who paint the burkha as a necessity for pious Islamic behaviour. One might argue that some women choose to wear the burkha. Ok - but most of these women who "choose" to cover themselves completely have not been brought up with the freedom to think otherwise. A woman must be allowed her the birthright to celebrate her physical womanhood by dressing in elegant, beautiful outfits and lighting the world with her smiles. And yes, I know there is poverty and war in the world - but wearing a burkha will not stop that.
There was a recent study that connects the genuine smiles in year book pictures to enduring happiness. Those who had genuine (Duchenne) smiles were seen to have led happier lives, while those with fake (Pan American) smiles were found to have led less fulfilled lives. So I would say keep smiling, keep smiling, keep smiling!! Show off your dazzling smile - at a stranger, at the one you love - if just to say "I am so glad that you are alive!"
As for the burkha - denying a handful of women the right to wear the burkha will NOT make the world safer. In fact being anti-Islamic is as much a secuirty threat as it is anti-human. Same applies to anti-Semitism and anti-Christianity. And forcing women to wear the burkha is no ticket to heaven.

Before Sunrise - I had to delete your blog from the "fearless Blogs" because it was taking me to all sorts of places and polluting my screen with pop-ups :-). Let me know if you have a new blog and I'll repalce.
Huge hug
Nazli
Hi Nazli,
That is ok, I deleted my blog for now... As soon as I restart I will let you know :-)
Hope you have a great break and a good thanksgiving!!
Hugs,
Cristiana
Yeah, I had to eliminate that link also of similar reasons. Sorry Christina!
Anyhow, what's up with that Dutch government story relating to the pope, burkahs and happines. Sounds intriguing. Let's hear more!
Zee Ya
burkhas? i thought they were banning birkenstocks!!
banning things makes no sense.
dress codes makes no sense.
two wrongs make two wrongs.
If burkhas are not inherently Islamic and if Mrs. Verdonk has proposed banning the burkhas, then
there is nothing intrisicly anti-Islamic in it. Inocuous? Much ado about nothing, maybe? Should we say 'thank you' to her on thanksgiving day, instead?
But I guess her hard-line face does deserve to give a genuine smile. Better than this, let's give her our own immense and contagious smiles to her!
Cheers and stay splendid.
...yesterday, with friends, we re talked about that women still lives in a male world, and only in the last 100 years
the women place in a society had grow...
I think that us lives in a world dominated by conceptions and misconceptionscfreated by the male side
and mostly the women in this human race were treated only like females
-without education of any kind for the women and low classes, for thousands of years
this "under the thumb" situation, now is changing
we live in he start of the process
I think in the future, men and women will be more jointed, close...now there are a bit of disconnection between both
How nice to include the news about the value of genuine smiles to balance the heavy side of the post. I don't think there's any way to take this suggestion other than it's being deliberately confrontational. What could it possibly achieve? It certainly isn't going to make any "radical islamist" more favourably disposed. And how do you define how much coverage is allowed and in what circumstances? Where do the beekeepers stand on this? They're going to be swept up in all this banning of body covering!
I think we all should run around naked, weather permitting ... !
Hmm, I have to get back to you on that one Nazli, because it is a multilayered issue, hence not easily covered up by burka's , nor removed by the latter by unveilement.
yes, yes, yes, wonderful piece.
I just cannot escape the insidious mindworm telling me that Verdonk is the sound made by a plastic Frisbee disc as it flies through the air and thumps somebody on the head.
Nice blog! Thank you for making me think!
Tom! Bloeuphoria.
I am going to borrow what you say, "two wrongs make two wrongs".
Hope you had a lovely thanksgiving :-) Did you venture to this part of the woods?
Cheers,
Nazli
Dear Caco - it is I who contends that burkhas are not inherently Islamic - however Verdonk does think they are and she is seen to be anti-Islamic. My point is - I am not fooled by the "security" spin. You see :-)
How are you? You enrich this blog with your insigh and thoughtfulness Caco and I hope that you will continue to do so for as long as it exists :-)
Yes I agree, let's all send our contagious smile to Verdonk and fill her heart with sunshine :-)
Caco - keep well and stay as enlightened as you are!
DOC
Cristiana - looking forward to your new blog my beautiful friend!
Hugs and kisses

Fernando- I agree that it is a man's world in which women live - HOWEVER, there are many women who choose to be live under the rules set by men. We live in a time when we can stand up agaisnt that and live on our own terms and it is up to women to make that stand. The women have eh choices and they must make those choices. It is their responsibility.
Of-course there are women in, for example Saudi Arabia, who cannot live their own lives because they are ruled by some barbaric laws. What choice do they have to lead their own lives? That is a region that needs "regime change" if any.
Nazli
Mr Angry - your points are well received and agreed with. It's simple - there should be no religion and no political rule that forces a woman - a person - to cover herlself from head to toe. Period. It is a violation of human rights.
At the same time, anti-Islamic sentiment must not be accepted - because that also is a violation of human rights.
Any violation of human rights cannot be masked as a "security" concern because that makes us less human.
Actually I am smiling - and I feel light and happy. Hope you are too!
Cheers and cheers
Nazli
Zee - you are such a free bohemian spirit and the world is only better for it.
Here's to your freedom of thought and your pursuit of happiness!
Zee Ya!
Nazli
Oh Joe! :-)
Every piece of peace to you!
Nazli
Bob - laughing so hard. Doink!
Now I am sure if I were to meet Verdonk I would discuss the weather and the latest fashion trends with her over tea. In fact I shall send her an invitation right now.
Cheers and visit again
Nazli
Salamaat,
I think Mr Angry touches on the subject and I want to take it further...What scares me about telling a woman *not* to cover; its pretty much as bad as telling her to cover (the two wrongs statement).
I am scared that tommorow, they will decide long skirts are inherently anti western and a security threat; or that a scarf is the same.
Why can't both East and west leave women alone. To choose, breathe and be truly free?
It irks me, because a similar discussion on what men Should wear OR not wear will be just so absurd.
What they are creating by passing these laws is women who would want to don the Burkha just to prove a point.
Maliha - my dear - agreed 100% Leave women alone - to choose, breathe, and to be truly free! Yes you are right - telling a woman *not* to cover; its pretty much as bad as telling her to cover!
Here's to every woman in the world! And every man! And every child! And every living thing!
:-)
Huges from you sister
Nazli
Truthfully, just from a "security" point of view, I could clad up in a burkah with multiple explosives on my belt. Nobody would care or know if I had been a woman or a man ... especially after I have blasted myself to little peaces, and a few bystanders as well.
My point being, the brits might not feel secure if someone is totally disguised in this day and age.
